Crete | Island Adventure

Wild mountains, lush groves & Mediterranean life

Cycling April 18-24, 2027 | Extended trip April 15-25, 2027

We'll be a group of 8-10 adventurers heading to Greece for cycling, hiking, swimming, food, music, and exploring the extraordinary island of Crete!

Chania! Our home base.

We'll spend six nights in an airy villa near Chania, with a pool, billiard room, beautiful shared spaces, and quiet cycling roads right from the doorstep.

This is one of Crete's greenest regions, with olive groves, vineyards, little stone villages, beaches, and the dramatic White Mountains rising to the south. We'll share breakfasts, relax after our rides, and enjoy some home-cooked dinners together.

Chania's beautiful Venetian old town is a short 10 minute drive or bus ride away, and we'll head into the city for three evenings of exploring, restaurants, and nightlife.

Epic rides!

Western Crete offers an incredible mix of riding: winding roads through agricultural valleys, tiny mountain villages, sustained climbs, and big views across the Mediterranean. In April, the countryside should be green, with spring wildflowers and possibly snow still visible on the highest peaks.

We'll explore Apokoronas, climb toward the White Mountains, visit Lake Kournas, and discover some of the quieter roads between the mountains and the coast.

Each cycling day will offer shorter and longer options. We're planning rides ranging from about 30–50 miles, with longer versions reaching 60–80 miles.

Delivered bikes! Our bikes will be delivered to our villa. Travel light. Since we will be driving from Heraklion to Chania this trip will not have an option to bring your own bike. Your modern carbon bike, helmet and pedals are included in the trip price.

Off the bike fun.

Crete is much too interesting to experience only from a bicycle!

We'll spend a day hiking the spectacular Imbros Gorge, following a narrow passage through towering limestone walls before emerging near the southern coast. Then we'll visit the tiny harbor town of Hora Sfakion for a waterfront lunch, a swim in the Libyan Sea, and time to enjoy the slower pace of southern Crete.

Closer to home, we'll have opportunities to visit beaches, swim, explore historic villages, wander Chania's old town, and learn more about Crete's thousands of years of history.

Eat & drink

Crete has one of the world's great regional food cultures. Its cooking celebrates olive oil, wild greens, mountain herbs, fresh seafood, goat and sheep cheeses, seasonal vegetables, and slow-cooked meats.

We'll explore Cretan specialties like dakos, a crunchy barley-rusk salad with tomatoes and cheese; kalitsounia, small pies stuffed with greens or fresh cheese; mountain lamb; Sfakian cheese pies with honey; and wonderful local wines. And there's always a little tsikoudia, Crete's traditional grape spirit, to finish a meal.

We'll mix simple village tavernas, home cooking, seaside lunches, and three particularly special dinners in Chania:

  • Salis: Creative contemporary Mediterranean cooking, seasonal Cretan ingredients, local wines, and a beautiful setting on the Venetian harbor.

  • Chrisostomos: Traditional cooking from western Crete and Sfakia, with wood-fired meats, greens, pies, and recipes rooted in the island's mountain villages.

  • MonEs: Contemporary Cretan cuisine in a beautifully restored 500-year-old Venetian mansion in Chania's Old Town. Creative dishes celebrate local ingredients and traditional flavors with a modern twist, all in a wonderfully atmospheric setting.

Culture of Crete. Ancient & Alive.

Crete has a rich and distinctive culture, shaped by thousands of years of history, a rugged landscape, and a strong sense of local identity. We'll explore ancient Minoan ruins, wander lively markets, visit traditional villages, and discover the cafés and neighborhood hangouts where everyday Greek life unfolds.

Music is an important part of Cretan culture, from traditional lyra and laouto performances to rock, jazz, and contemporary Greek bands. We'll explore Heraklion's music scene, sample local wines and regional specialties, and enjoy the Greek tradition of long, leisurely meals shared with friends. Along the way, we'll leave plenty of room for spontaneous discoveries and unexpected encounters with the people and culture of Crete.

Your Guide. Hugh.

I’ve been cycling throughout my life, although it took decades to realize that it was way more fun to do with other people. One of the few things I’ve won in this short life was a cooking competition. I love planning adventures and learning more about all the humans I am lucky enough to hang out with.
