The Pilot
A Filmmaking Camp for Highly Frivolous People.
April 24-26, 2026 | Sutter Creek, CA
Join High Frivolity Films & Blue Oak Adventures for a 3-day film camp on location in the Sierra Foothills.
We’re gathering a small group of friends in the very charming town of Sutter Creek for a filmmaking weekend led by Asali, April 24–26. The idea is simple: in three relaxed, joy-filled days, we’ll learn how to make short films together, eat well (one dinner in, one dinner out on the town), wander, play, and end with our own mini film festival before returning to our less-frivolous everyday lives.
We’ll take Friday off to have three days to play, bike, hike, eat, drink & make a short film. We’ll stay in a clean, comfy modern home within walking distance of everything we need in town.
Asali Echols, a Bay Area filmmaker, educator, and Highly Frivolous Person, will direct the weekend workshop. She has been part of the Bay Area filmmaking scene since 2009, with directing credits including the animated short The Violin Upstairs (2019), the award-winning short documentary Lion on the Mat (2021), and two upcoming feature films, Burrocracy (2026) and Talking Tiki (2026). Asali has taught undergraduate film production at San Francisco State University and has taught numerous summer filmmaking workshops. Her current work centers around contemporary American culture and individuals who forge unique paths.
